The main objective of blackjack is to build a hand with a higher value than the dealer's without going over 21. If your total exceeds 21 (a bust), you lose automatically regardless of what the dealer holds. You're not competing against other players at the table – only against the dealer.
Number cards (2–10) are worth their face value. Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are all worth 10. An Ace can be worth either 1 or 11 – whichever is more beneficial to your hand at that point.
If your first two cards are an Ace and a 10-value card (10, J, Q, or K), you've got Blackjack! This is the best possible hand and typically pays 3:2 or 6:5 depending on the table rules. At most Rich 1988 tables, Blackjack pays 3:2.
Hit – Request one more card. Stand – Stop drawing cards and keep your current hand. Double Down – Double your bet and receive exactly one more card. Split – If your first two cards are of equal value, split them into two separate hands. Surrender – Surrender and reclaim half your bet (available at select tables).
The dealer must hit when their hand totals 16 or less, and must stand when it totals 17 or more. At most Rich 1988 tables, the dealer stands on soft 17 – meaning even an Ace+6 hand won't prompt another card.
When the dealer's first card is an Ace, players are offered Insurance – a side bet worth half the original wager. If the dealer has Blackjack, Insurance pays 2:1. Statistically, however, Insurance is generally not favourable for players over the long run.
